ROŽNIK HILL

LIVE STREAM - Rožnik Hill, Ljubljana

Live stream from urban forest of Ljubljana relays a sound of landscape park with city noise and nerby human an nonhuman spicies. An open microphone is placed under the canopy of magnificent beeches and spruces on the slope of the Rožnik hill. As we were setting up the open microphone, a roe deer came to visit us. Deer families, various small rodents, squirrels and as many as 68 different species of birds are typical inhabitants of this urban forest.

In cooperation with the Tivoli, Rožnik and Šiška Hill Landscape Park, Ljubljana stereo microphone is attached at the water pumping station on the Rožnik hill, that builted by well known architect Jože Plečnik. Microphone location is not far from Steklenik gallery for sound, bioacoustics and art, located in the space of Tivoli greenhouse where Cona produces exhibitions and events dedicated to sound and bio acoustic art works and installations, thus acting as some kind of extended dislocated gallery aural sensor.

Spacious landscape park encompasses the Tivoli city park and the forest areas of nerby hils. For comparison, New York's Central Park is 341 ha, London's Hyde Park 140 ha, the area of the Tivoli Landscape Park, and Rožnik on Šišenski Hill covers as much as 460 ha. But for another comparison Ljubljana has thirty times less population than London.

Tivoli Park is Ljubljana was designed in 1813 by the French engineer Jean Blanchard and created by joining together the parks which had surrounded Podturn and Cekin Mansions. In the 19th century, the hilly part of the landscape park was entirely covered with forest. Step by step, the area has become firmly lodged in the consciousness of the city dwellers as an uninhabited urban space for relaxation and recreation and remains as such even today.
